This free IELTS speaking practice tool works like a mini speaking test. A natural British or American examiner voice reads each question, a timer counts your preparation and speaking time, and your answers are recorded so you can listen back and improve. There is also an Aptis speaking mode for Parts 1 and 4.
Recordings stay on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, and you do not need an account.

How to Use the IELTS Speaking Practice Tool
- Choose the part: IELTS Part 1, 2 or 3, or Aptis Part 1 or 4.
- Pick an examiner voice. UK Female and UK Male sound closest to many real tests.
- Press Start and allow microphone access if you want recordings.
- Listen to the question, prepare if the part includes preparation time, and speak when you hear the beep.
- Listen back to each answer below the timer. In Chrome or Edge you can also turn on a live transcript that counts your words per minute and filler words such as “um” and “like”.
What Each Mode Practises
- IELTS Part 1: four short personal questions, about 20 to 30 seconds each.
- IELTS Part 2: a cue card with 1 minute to prepare and up to 2 minutes to speak.
- IELTS Part 3: three discussion questions that need opinions, reasons and examples.
- Aptis Part 1: three personal questions with 30 seconds for each answer.
- Aptis Part 4: three related questions with 1 minute to prepare and 2 minutes to speak.
Aptis Parts 2 and 3 are based on photos, so they are not included. For the official formats, see the IELTS speaking format and the British Council’s Aptis test information.
How to Get the Most from IELTS Speaking Practice
- Record, then listen once for fluency (pauses, fillers) and once for accuracy (grammar, vocabulary).
- Extend your answers with a reason and an example: “I prefer mornings because… For example…”
- Use the full Part 2 time. Plan four quick notes that match the cue card points.
- Repeat a question the next day and compare recordings to hear your progress.
- Hide the question text to practise understanding by ear, as in the real test.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this IELTS speaking practice tool free?
Yes. It is completely free, runs in your browser and needs no sign-up. Recordings stay on your device unless you download them.
Does the tool give me a band score?
No. Band scores need a trained examiner. The tool helps you practise under real timing, listen back to your answers and track words per minute and filler words.
Can I use it for the Aptis speaking test?
Yes. Aptis Part 1 and Part 4 modes follow the timing of those parts. Parts 2 and 3 are photo-based and are not included.
Why can I not hear the examiner on my phone?
Press the volume-up button while the examiner is speaking, because the voice uses media volume. On iPhone, also turn off Silent mode.
